The Top 5 Challenges Women Leaders Face Internationally and How to Overcome Them

Updated: Oct 28

Confident international women leaders standing between global city skylines, symbolizing cross-cultural leadership and empowerment.

Stepping into international leadership can be one of the most rewarding and challenging experiences for women professionals. From navigating cultural nuances to maintaining confidence and balance across borders, global leadership demands adaptability and self-awareness. Drawing from over 30 years of cross-cultural experience in Japan, France, and the U.S., this article explores the five most common challenges women leaders face — and how to transform each into an opportunity for authentic growth and empowered leadership.

Leading globally is one of the most rewarding experiences a businesswoman can have. But it's not without its challenges. Drawing from more than 30 years of living and working in Japan, starting and running companies, and mentoring women leaders worldwide, I've begun to see a standard set of challenges common among women who have worked beyond their home borders. The good news? Every concern can be redefined as an opportunity to learn and grow when met with appropriate interventions and support.

Navigating Unspoken Cultural Norms

The Challenge :

International women may come to new countries with strong technical skills and experience on the global stage, but their leadership styles might not be in tune with local cultures. Countries such as Japan, France, and the USA have different expectations regarding hierarchy, communication, and decision-making. What is seen as an "initiative" in some cultures is considered a disruption in others.

How to Overcome It :

Discover the invisible rules of the culture, but don't let them consume you. At Global Compass, I help women decipher cultural codes, understand the nuances of indirect communication, and build consensus for informed decision-making. Knowing the differences will give you more credibility, the ability to motivate your team, and help you gain influence among stakeholders.

Action Steps :

·      Watch meetings for unwritten rules of behavior

·      Observing culture: Watch how people behave in a meeting.

·      Ask Questions: Interact with the local community and learn from locals about cultural assumptions.

There are different ways and means of communicating with people that work for the culture, yet don’t deceive yourself.

Confidence, Meet Cultural Humility

The Challenge :

To what extent should you assert yourself, and how much should you go with the flow? Some women may feel the need to pull their punches, worried that they will alienate colleagues by pushing too hard; others may hold back because they are afraid of being "too much."

How to Overcome It :

Think of leadership as a dance, not a solo. Develop "cultural agility" by posing thoughtful questions, listening actively, and reframing the ideas you bring to reflect the values of a place. Coaching can help you find that "sweet spot" where you are contributing and your global mindset is a valuable asset.

Action Steps :

·      Listen actively: Make it a point to listen attentively before speaking, and consider the speaker's message.

·      Refashion Ideas: Adjust your proposals to align with the cultural or economic values and concerns of the other side.

·      Feedback: Seek feedback from peers as often as possible to improve at what you do.

Overcoming isolation

The Challenge :

Being a senior female leader in another country can be a lonely experience. You may be the only woman at the executive table, or the only foreigner in the room. As you climb, your circle may feel smaller which can lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation.

How to Overcome It :

You don't have to go through this alone. Form a personal board of advisors: mentors, peers, and coaches who know your context and challenge you. At Global Compass, I help individuals build stronger relationships with allies within and outside their organizations.

Action Steps :

·      Network strategically: attend industry and professional events to expand your professional network.

·      Explore Peer Mentoring: Locate a mentor with similar experiences and receive support.

·      Harness Technology: Utilize tools like virtual platforms to link up with other women leaders worldwide.

Managing Career Transitions and Reinvention

The Challenge :

Many women need to reinvent their careers multiple times throughout their lives due to relocations, family matters, and organizational changes. The essential question and here I'm getting so familiar with the point of pompousness that you may want to scroll down six paragraphs to find out exactly what my average times were in those marathons and triathlons again? Is how do you remain engaged and fulfilled between chapter one, when all your dreams are still possible, and chapter two, when someone nudges you off their path?

How to Overcome It :

Perspective every transition as a reminder to make sure you are tracking with what you created your work to do. I help clients map a “North Star Career Map” based on their values, strengths, and desired impact so that every pivot moves them closer to the life and leadership legacy they want.

Action Steps :

·      Values reflection: Ask yourself what's most important to you in a career.

·      Clearly define the goals: Make short-term (small) and long-term goals that fit your vision.

·      Look to the Future: Even if it doesn't seem "like you," consider work that's outside your typical career path but similarly aligns with what matters to you.

Maintaining Well-Being and Boundaries

The Challenge :

Personal and professional demands on leaders come from all directions: late-night crisis calls, cross-border calamities that need attention, a team's demand for guidance, and a need at home. This continual pressure can be extremely draining, so it's essential to prioritize health and wellness.

How to Overcome It :

Set boundaries on your agenda. Plan for recovery time, delegate where possible, and say no intelligently on the right occasions without burning bridges. With coaching, we cultivate habits that ground and strengthen you in your pursuit of sustainable leadership.

Action Steps :

·      Plan for Downtime: Ensure that time to recover is in your schedule and non-negotiable.

·      Assign Task to Others: If you have a task that can be done by someone else, give it to them so that you can concentrate on more pressing work.

·      Learn to Say No: Evaluate requests in light of your current commitments and values, and say "no" if it's not feasible.
